Exposition locates the authority

where it belongs - in God's Word

“Exposition” means “to explain, to show,” and exposition of God’s Word is a primary function of a pastor. God breathed out whole books, not “sermon sound bytes” or isolated mottoes. Thus, preaching whole books most fully reflects God’s purpose in every book. The order and arrangement of thoughts is not random. Sequential exposition demonstrates the profitability of all Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16), and takes God at His Word in the purest sense. Every verse, paragraph, and chapter deserves sermonic attention.

To unpack a book from beginning to end is to hear God speak and to watch His mind move from one point to the next. The original readers heard the whole book read. Sequential exposition follows that pattern. Since Scripture is the revelation (“revealing”) of God, then looking into every verse ensures the most comprehensive view of Who He is.

Exposition locates authority where it belongs—in God’s Word. God is an able communicator, and He has a message for His people. The preacher is not to think he can improve upon it. Since the Bible is God-breathed, infallible, inerrant, and sufficient, then it must be explained in the context in which God said it.
